Writer Workshops Costa Rica

What: Three separate one-week seminars
When:  January 3 – 28
Where: Normas villas, 200 metros al oeste de la plaza de futbol La Garita, Alajuela, Costa Rica

Why:

Sign up for any or all of three one-week seminar/retreats, focus on a different aspect of your writing each week and learn yoga each morning from a certified yoga instructor.

The seminars:

Week 1: January 3-10

Acting Exercises for the Creative Writer
Leader: Isabelle Pierre

  • Experience how actors use physical exercises (including Laban, Lecoq, psychology gesture and improv) to explore character.
  • Move, play and feel a little silly.
  • Finish up with short reading-based workshop discoveries.

Isabelle Pierre is a NYC born actress and writer previously featured on NBC’s Shades of Blue and Hulu’s The Path. She also participated in two web-series: No Method and Finding Me: The Series. Isabelle has performed off-off Broadway at the American Theatre of Actors, HERE Arts Center and The Flea Theatre.


Week 2 : January 12- 19

Fundamentals of Comedy
Leader: Ginny Leise

Humor: a most beloved yet often intimidating genre. Everybody is funny and has a funny a story to tell. This workshop aims to instill writers with confidence in their own unique comedic voice. Start with the foundations of Comedy 101, examples of the greats and then jump into our own personal essays and storytelling performances. The workshop will culminate in a show for every participant to read or perform their work.

Ginny Leise is a writer, filmmaker and comedian living in Astoria, NY. She has extensive experience and training in improv and sketch writing at The People’s Improv Theater and Upright Citizen’s Brigade, storytelling at the Magnet Theater with Adam Wade and acting at the Atlantic Acting School. She has been telling comedic stories on stage for four years. She has hosted her own shows at Union Hall and The Bell House in Brooklyn and toured all over the country with a storytelling ensemble. Her writing credits include the play Great Gig: A Workshop for Business, the short film Pillows, the web series, The Shame Game, Feminist Babysitter and Hearts of Gold. Her most recent project is the TV pilot Urban Teach Now.

Week 3: January 21-28

Success through Self-Publishing
Leader: Robert Kroese

Learn the ropes of self publishing, including the differences between self-publishing and traditional publishing, e-book formatting, distribution, and marketing your book.

Robert Kroese has written eleven novels, mostly humorous scifi and fantasy, including Mercury Falls. Five of these were published by Amazon’s scifi imprint, 47North and five were self-published. Robert’s latest book, The Big Sheep, is published by Thomas Dunne/MacMillan.
